As part of the curriculum, each of our students participate in music, movement and drama, but we also have additional cultural programs that provide students with further opportunities to develop their musical and dramatic talents. Mortdale Public School actively participates in a variety of cultural activities and events, both for in-school demonstration and at various festivals and gala days held for the local community. Band Students in these bands have the opportunity to play flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and tuned and untuned percussion. This program encompasses tutoring sessions with professional tutors as well and the conducting of the ensemble by our music specialist teacher. The group performs at many school and community events as well as entering in band festivals, where their high level of performance has been officially recognised. Choir Our Junior Choir consists of all Year 2 students. The Junior Choir learns and performs a variety of songs for the school, as well as for local churches, throughout the year. From this choir Mortdale Public School's Performance Choir is selected. The Junior Performance Choir participates at the Hurstville Zone Musical Festival held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre each year. Students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have the opportunity to belong to the Mortdale Public School Senior Choir. This group of dedicated students rehearse weekly and learn to read music as well as develop their singing technique through these lessons. The Senior Choir has a reputation for having a very mature sound and performs at a variety of school and community events as well as participating annually in the Hurstville Zone Music Festival. Musical Each year Mortdale Public School produces and presents a school musical. Students from Years Three to Six are invited to audition for the musical and those who are successful work many hours in rehearsals throughout the year to perfect their performances. Other students are involved in stage and costume design for the production. The 2008 production was "Little Stars". The 2009 production is "Wonder in Aliceland". Dance Performance Dancing is an essential part of the Kindergarten to Year Six curriculum. Genres including Ballroom and Hip Hop, popular dances, cultural dances, movement to music and drama is incorporated in the general teaching program of all grades. Dancesport: Mortdale Public School achieved Overall Champions in the Dancesport Challenge in 2007 and 2008. Dancesport is a Ballroom Dancing Competition including tango, jive, salsa and cha-cha. In 2009, Mortdale again competed in the Dancesport Challenge at Sydney Sports Centre at Homebush. We achieved a first place in Tango and Jive and third place in Salsa. Hip Hop: In 2009 Mortdale formed its own Hip Hop Group of 15 students. The group trained for 10 weeks after school and during lunch breaks. The group was entered in the McDonald's Sydney Eisteddford 2009 which was held at the University of New South Wales. In this category, our Hip Hop group achieved 2nd place against Performing Arts schools. Quite a feat! They were also invited to perform at the Dance of Champions Eisteddford against all winners of events at the Eisteddford. |
