1950's:

Sports Excellence -
Rugby League & Cricket

The boys from Mortdale had a fine sporting record throughout the 1930’s and 40's, winning several rugby league and cricket premierships. However, during the 1950’s the boys dominated the entire district in many competitions. The rugby league team had proved too good for the opposition. But no team’s success was more impressive than the 1951 team which achieved the profound success of winning the Metropolitan Championship. In achieving this result they amassed a season total of 283 points for, with not one point being scored against them.

That success was emulated again in 1955, this team totalling 340 points for, without having their line crossed. From these years, many fine footballers were to graduate to the ranks of the district club, St George. The most notable players to do so were Reg Gasnier and Billy Smith. Both these players represented Australia on numerous occasions.

Cricket Conquerors

The 1950’s also witnessed success on the cricket field for Mortdale School. Mr John Riley organised and coached the cricket team and its successes were numerous. From 1954, well into the 1960’s, the cricket team won many premierships.

Though there was emphasis on team effort, the amazing efforts of John Metcalf require recognition. In 1955, John secured the incredible bowling figures of 7 out for 1 run against Gymea Bay School. In the same year John also succeeded with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 101 against Sylvania School.
