Mortdale Public School students are involved in a variety of academic activities in addition to being active learners in the usual classroom curriculum. Gifted and Talented Enrichment Programs (G&T) Our G&T Program provides students with opportunities to extend and challenge their minds. We participate in Tournament of Minds each year as well as other G&T Programs.
Students involved in Tournament of Minds are required to work as a group to solve an unusual problem, provided by a panel of judges. They develop diverse skills, enterprise, time-management and collaborative working skills within this challenging and competitive environment. The Tournament is open to students from Years 3 to 6. Public Speaking Students from Mortdale Public School participate in the Sydney Region Public Speaking competition each year. Support Unit Mortdale Public School hosts a support unit for the Sydney Region. It comprises three classes: one class for students experiencing difficulties in reading and two classes for students with a diagnosed language disability. Admission to all three classes is by referral from local schools or preschools. The referral process is rigorous and involves committee decision-making, consultation and accountability. Students in the reading class attend every day from 9.30am until 1:00pm, for one term only. They return to their home schools in the afternoon. Students accepted into our language classes are enrolled in Mortdale Public School and attend full-time for one year. The maximum placement is two years. Placement in all support unit classes is reviewed regularly. |
